The Empty Page

Let curiosity arrive before the need to be impressive. An empty page offers spaciousness rather than judgment; make one mark for discovery alone.

A page has no opinion about you. It does not know your last piece was good or your next one is late. The torn paper on the worktable is not a ruin; it is proof that someone was willing to make a mark and see. This card points at the moment before making, when the wish to be good arrives ahead of the wish to find out. Curiosity is quieter than ambition and much easier to begin with. One line drawn to see where it goes asks nothing of your reputation. The page has room for that, and for the next one, and for the mistakes in between.

You might take a scrap of paper, not a nice notebook, and make one mark on it with no plan: a line, a shape, a word you like the sound of. Sit with it for a breath before adding anything. If a second mark wants to come, let it. If not, the first one was enough.
