What ancestral work actually is

Ancestral veneration is a devotional practice, present in many traditions, of honouring and maintaining a relationship with the dead of your line. It is not the same as mediumship, which is an attempt at contact with a specific person. Veneration is closer to tending: prayer, offering, remembrance, and asking for the line's blessing on the living.

Practitioners approach it strictly through their own tradition, and the traditions differ enormously in what they consider appropriate. Read a practitioner's shop before commissioning, and say what tradition your family sits in — or that it does not sit in one, which is also common and workable.

What people commission for a reunion

• A blessing on the family line, said before or on the day.
• Ancestral veneration performed on the family's behalf — usually the most meaningful of these and the least understood.
• A prayer for the dead, especially where the reunion follows a loss.
• Readings for individual family members, ordered ahead and handed out.
• A mediumship reading for a specific relative, which is a distinct practice and should be commissioned as such.

What the practitioner will ask for

Usually names, roughly where and when the line comes from, and what you know about it. You do not need a genealogy — practitioners work with fragments constantly, and "I know my great-grandmother's name and nothing further back" is enough to begin. Say plainly if the family history includes estrangement, violence or something you would rather not have addressed.

A note on families

Reunions gather people who believe very different things, sometimes strongly. Work commissioned for the family as a whole is worth mentioning to the family as a whole before the day, rather than as a surprise. Individual readings should stay private to the person who received them.
