The Cedar Circle

Cedar boughs make a ring, not a roof. Inside the circle you are held on every side, and above you the sky is still entirely open. This card points at the boundaries in your life that work like that: the evening you keep for yourself, the conversation topic you decline, the door you close to work at six. A good boundary is not a wall against the world. It is an edge that lets you soften inside it, because you are no longer bracing. The limits that leave you feeling more like yourself are the cedar. The ones that seal out the sky are something else, and you can tell the difference by how you breathe inside them.

You might step outside and stand near something living, a tree, a hedge, a pot of herbs on the step, and name one boundary you want to keep this week. Say it simply, as an intention rather than a rule, the way you would tell a friend. Then look up for a moment and notice that the sky is still open above the edge you just named.
