Each year the sun comes back to the exact position it occupied at your birth, usually within a day of your birthday. A solar return chart is cast for that precise moment and read as a chart for the year that follows. It is a distinct piece of astrological work from your natal chart, which never changes, and it is bought yearly rather than once.

It needs the same data a natal reading needs — date, exact time and city of birth — because the return is calculated from the natal sun's precise degree.

Solar return, year-ahead reading, or natal chart?

• Natal chart reading — who you are, structurally. Bought once, around $42. The right first purchase if you have never had one.
• Solar return — the specific year beginning at this birthday, read astrologically.
• Year-ahead tarot reading — the next twelve months read through cards, often a card or spread per month, around $35. No birth data needed, which matters if you do not have your birth time.

If you do not know your birth time, the year-ahead tarot reading is the better buy: it gives you the same shape of answer without depending on data you cannot get.

As a gift

Birthday readings are one of the most commonly gifted commissions, and the gift works better if the recipient supplies their own question. Commission it, then have them send their intention through the order chat — the reading is then genuinely about them rather than about what you assumed they wanted. For a chart reading you will need their birth data, which usually means asking.
