The Lantern Path

Light only the next honest step. A lantern reveals enough ground for one step, making local clarity more useful than total certainty.

A lantern lights a circle of ground about as wide as a stride. Beyond that the path bends into the dark, and no amount of holding the lantern higher makes the bend visible. This card points at the decisions in your day that you keep trying to see all the way to the end: the work question, the hard conversation, the move you are turning over. Local clarity is enough for now. You can see the next honest step, the one that is plainly true to you, and that is what the light is for. Certainty about the whole road is not on offer to anyone. A single clear step is, and it is the same step everyone has ever taken.

You might take three slow breaths and ask yourself only what the next honest step is, not the fifth. Something the size of one stride: a message sent, a question asked, a walk to think. Take that step, and afterward say a small thank you for the ground you could actually see.
