The Brave Seed

Courage may look like staying soft while you begin. A seed breaks open in darkness, reminding you that courage may be private and almost invisible.

Nobody watches a seed open. It happens in the dark, in the wet, with the shell splitting along a line no one drew. This card points at the courage in your day that does not look like courage from the outside: staying soft after being hurt, admitting you do not know, beginning again at a thing that did not work last spring. Courage of this kind is mostly private. It happens in the seconds before you speak, in the choice to keep your voice gentle when it wanted to harden. Softness is not the opposite of bravery. Sometimes it is the shape bravery has to take in order to grow at all. The soil is dark on purpose. Roots go down before anything shows.

You might take a few minutes tonight to sit with one brave thing you did today that nobody saw. Perhaps you stayed open when it would have been easier to close. Name it plainly to yourself, without making it larger. Then let it sit in the dark a while, the way seeds do.
