The Quiet Table

Make a little room for what wants to join you. An open chair is an invitation, not an obligation; let belonging arrive without a performance.

A round table with an empty chair is not a table missing something. It is a table with room. This card points at the small welcomes already possible in your day: the extra plate set without asking, the pause in a conversation left open for someone quieter, the text that says come if you like, no pressure. Belonging does not have to be arranged. Most of the time it only asks for a place kept clear. You are not required to fill the chair or to entertain whoever sits down in it. You are only keeping the seat pulled out a little, so that what wants to join you can see there is room. The invitation is quiet. So is the arrival, usually.

One way to hold this today is to leave a little room somewhere on purpose: an empty chair beside you, a few minutes unscheduled, a line at the bottom of a page. Write or say a short prayer, or a short wish, for whatever might arrive there. Then get on with your day and let it come or not.
