The Quiet Choir

Belonging can begin with listening for the note you carry. A choir begins in listening; offer the note that is yours without overpowering the larger song.

A choir does not start by singing. It starts with everyone finding the note they have been handed and listening for how it sits against the others. This card points at the rooms you walk into unsure whether you fit: a new team, a family table, a group of friends who have known each other longer than you. The instinct is to be louder or to disappear. There is a third option, which is to listen until you can hear where a voice like yours would belong, and then to offer it at the volume the room can hold. Harmony is not everyone singing the same line. It is each part being sung on purpose.

You might take a few slow breaths before the next time you join a group, in person or otherwise, and set a small intention: to listen for a full minute before speaking. When you do speak, let it be the one thing that is honestly yours to add. Notice how the room sounds with your note in it.
