The Fern Uncurling

Growth may be gradual and still be wholehearted. A fern unfurls by degrees too small to watch, yet a season reveals unmistakable growth.

You cannot watch a fern open. Stand in front of it for an hour and nothing seems to move, but come back in a week and the coil has become a frond. This card points at the parts of your life that are growing too slowly to feel like growth: the language you are learning three words at a time, the strength returning after a long stretch of tiredness, the trust being rebuilt a little at a time. Slow is not the same as halfhearted. The fern is giving everything it has to a motion too fine to see. The older leaves around it were once this small, and this patient.

One way to hold this today is a few lines in a notebook about something you are in the middle of learning right now, before there is anything to show for it: a language at three words a week, a habit in its second month, a walk that is still short. Describe where it stands today, nothing more. If a word of thanks rises for being allowed to go this slowly, let it stand on the page.
