The Open Palm

Practice receiving without closing around the gift. An open hand can receive without possessing, letting help or praise touch you and remain freely given.

Rain lands on an open hand and stays a moment before it runs off. Close your fingers and you keep a few drops, but the next ones fall on your knuckles. This card is about the small offerings that arrive in a day and how you meet them: a compliment on your work, a neighbor carrying your bag up the stairs, a friend saying you seem well. The reflex is to deflect, or to grip, or to start tallying what is owed back. Receiving is a quieter skill. It is letting the thing land, saying thank you, and letting your hand stay open for whatever comes next.

One way to hold this today is to wash your hands slowly at the end of the day, palms open under the water, and leave them open a moment after the tap is off. Then write down two or three things that were given to you since morning, however small. Keep the tone plain. If one of them was hard to accept, write that too, and leave it there, unanswered.
