The Rain Jar

A jar under the roof edge fills because it was set out before the rain, not during it. This card points at the ordinary things that refill you: a long phone call with someone who knows you, an hour with your hands in a project, a nap you did not apologize for, a neighbor who lends the ladder. It is easy to wait until you are parched to go looking for them. The jar suggests another way. Stay open on the days when you feel fine, and let the good things collect a little at a time. Dry hours are ordinary. Having something already in the jar changes how they feel.

You might set a small jar or cup somewhere you pass often and, each time you notice something that refilled you today, drop in a slip of paper naming it. A song, a kind word, a good stretch of work, a plate someone else washed. Read a few of them on an evening when the day feels thin, and see what has already collected.
