A mediumship reading is specifically about contact with someone who has died, and it is a distinct practice from a psychic or tarot reading. Not every reader offers it. Practitioners who do will say plainly what came through and what did not, which is the difference between an honest medium and a performance.
This is a different practice, not a variation
A psychic reading works with impressions about your situation. A mediumship reading is an attempt at contact with a specific person who has died. Practitioners treat these as separate skills, and a reader who does not practise mediumship will tell you so rather than improvise something that sounds close enough. Say plainly in your intention that mediumship is what you are asking for.
What an honest medium does
- Separates what came through from what they inferred, and says which is which.
- Reports the specific and the strange — a phrase, an object, a smell — rather than only the universally applicable.
- Says when nothing came, or when it was faint. This happens, and admitting it is the mark of the practice being real to them.
- Does not press you for information and then hand it back to you as a message.
- Does not claim to know how someone died, or to relay accusations about the living.
You can help by writing a short, plain intention: who they were to you, roughly when they died, and what you are hoping for. Withholding everything as a test is your right, but it usually produces a more impressive reading rather than a more meaningful one.
Grief, and what this is not
Mediumship is commissioned by people in the middle of the worst thing that has happened to them, and it deserves saying clearly: a reading is not grief counselling, and it is not a substitute for mental health care.
