Career tarot readings: what they can help you think through

The questions career readings are good at

• Timing you control: when to raise a promotion, when to hand in notice, when to start the side project.

The questions they are not good at

A reading cannot tell you whether a particular employer will hire you, what they will offer, or whether a round of layoffs will reach you. Those are other people's decisions, made on information the cards do not have, and a reader who claims otherwise is selling certainty they cannot deliver. A career reading is also not career counselling, financial planning, or advice about a contract or a dismissal. If you are facing a legal dispute or harassment at work, the right first call is a professional who handles those.

What a reading can do is slow you down at the moment you are most likely to decide in a rush, and put the thing you have been avoiding on the table. That is worth more than a forecast.

How to frame a career question

Give the reader the options as they actually stand, the deadline if there is one, and what is pulling you each way. Then ask an open question. "Should I take this job?" invites a yes or a no. "What does taking this job ask of me, and what does staying ask?" invites a reading. If money is the heart of it, say so; readers work better with the real stakes than with a polite version.
